Talonflame runs no item intentionally so Acrobatics receives the doubling power boost from turn one. Gale Wings grants priority to Tailwind, allowing the team to set speed control before opponents act; losing HP via Brave Bird would remove this priority on subsequent Tailwinds, making itemless Acrobatics the more consistent choice. Adamant nature and max Attack investment make Acrobatics a strong STAB hit in addition to the Tailwind utility. Talonflame is brought when opponents have their own speed control that needs matching, or when the team's naturally high Speed alone is insufficient. Protect gives a safe turn to keep Gale Wings active and scout opponent moves.
